Is 297/340 in the GRE really that much of a good and deserving score to get into top US universities? Or is it just a matter of sound SOPs and LORs?

‘Top’ US universities require atleast 300 in the GRE. And majority of the ones who make it to the top universities, have GRE of more than 320.

SOP and LOR will only come into effect if your GRE is above the required threshold (mostly 300, but 290 for some). An applicant with low GRE won’t even make past the initial screening, and that means his SOP and LOR won’t ever be read.

270 will get you nowhere, not even to the lowest of the low ranked universities. I’d suggest you to retake the GRE. All the best!
